endings beget beginnings

expiration date/mother/one year ago today

the thing to do when breath is alternating between shallow and shallow is to play in the kitchen. if i can play in the kitchen it keeps my hands busy and my emotions calm/balanced/serene. i am able to write music and lyrical pieces in my head. or pray over the food i am preparing, a habit i picked up long ago and kept by choice in my current behaviour system.
so, on this day, this anniversary, i invited my siblings to join us for brunch and decided to prepare our mother's midday favourite food items. i know the recipes by heart but i always feel like i need to verify them from her cookbook, in her handwriting. perfect penmanship, like that of other grandmothers, schooled in a way long forgotten - where the look, the style and precision of handwriting lent itself as another extension of who a person was. she was a very fashionable woman - very handsome and tall for her generation, with a buxom movie star figure. a natural blonde, (who helped the natural along in her latter years), she maintained an innocence that she insisted on keeping till the day she died.
chile con queso, fruit salad, sausage, bacon, croissants, fresh orange juice and champagne, wine or cocktail, (the alcohol that none of us ever got around to.)
after eating, we called her sister, my godmother and now the family matriarch. now SHE would have gotten 'round to the libations! she knows how to celebrate. although a bit reserved at the start of the call, she shot her own brand of enthusiasm to her nieces and nephew right through the phone wire. and i felt it. a tie, an ancestral bond that expressed itself. the voices of my sister and brother were genuinely animated, as they spoke to our favourite relative. as the telephone passed from one to another, conversations didn't really say anything at all, but all was said with intent, love for each other and a shared feeling - the one about missing her.

i thought of the place where we all grew up. the magic home where, for a while, the american dream took hold. where my mother cooked the best brunch i have ever eaten. where my brother, sister, parents and i ate together in harmony. where i learned the meaning of family. where my roots took hold. and as i sat, sharing a remembrance meal today, brother and sister with me, parents no longer in material form, with the man i love on my right side, i felt my mother agreeing with me that the brunch could have been better....croissants not quite crisp enough, meats...comme ci comme ça, but the chile con queso was a winner. she would have loved it.
she loved us. and we loved her.

windy city blues

well! a week ago today i flew to chicago and joyously reunited with my man. we drove to appleton wisconsin that night, woke up on a bright birthday morning - my aforementioned man's - and set out for the breathtakingly beautiful sturgeon bay. i was ecstatic to be back in such a very dreamy, yet very american setting; it's the kind of american place that one has a tendency to forget exists when in far more cynical places... after checking into the beach harbor resort, we prepared ourselves for the saturday night gig at the hitching post in valmy. a birthday bash for those born in august. it was a grand night. the music was exquisite and those in attendance were digging it!
the next day, back at the beach harbor, sunday boasted more music by even more musicians sharing the stage, a lot of 'cherry bounces', and a caravan over the michigan street bridge to the nautical inn, around 11pm, where more music was requested and played! we retired after 3ish in the morning...oh well, at least it was a little earlier than the night before...

the Bard was right. parting is such sweet sorrow. we were leaving for chicago on monday - first thing in the morning
...we left sturgeon bay at 3:42 in the afternoon...with much melancholy and resistance...even more so for my partner, as he had been living there for the entire month of august and loving it.
by the time we arrived in chicago we were, perhaps, not in the best of mental spaces to be in chi town. it was a hideous night. all i really cared about was leaving.
the next morning was all about hissing mist in the air, the bongo room for eats, and the art institute for visual pleasure.
a brief reprieve from the harsh city outside, the museum was astonishing. although i have been fortunate enough to visit museums far and near, monday was the first time i set foot in the art institute of chicago. at my love's insistence we made our way to the haystacks of monet, the bedroom of van gogh and much more in hasty fashion, due to the fact we both had separate planes to catch to
our home.

back outside the museum...

it was the 'hold your breath and hope you make the flight' kind of ride to O'Hare International. if you read the previous blog - 'why do i have to go to LA' ....friends, thAt was a cakewalk in comparison to the absurdity called 'commuting' in and surrounding chicago and they HAve the Ltrain! ...you are not in sunny southern california either. whew!
i do not know how these people do it everyday.
with a car to return to the car rental office and a shuttle to catch from there to the actual airline terminal at one of the largest airports in the world, the baggage and ticket check-in to go through and that final frontier of the orange alert security fear zone, with an extra helping of a 'i wanna get outta here' screaming voice in the head and the chances of actually not missing the flight...odds not in one's favour..., all i could focus on was the incredible art at the institute and the weekend of joy and music i had just experienced.
i think that might have worked some magic. against teeming odds, my partner and i found our separate planes on different airlines to catch back to our home that night. i think we are both still a little blue and still carrying around a pocketful or so of wanderlust but happy to be together, looking forward to the next adventure, the next place to take off and the next to land.

why do i have to go to LA...

thursday night, at the troubadour, on the verge of hollywood, i saw todd snider perform. again. todd is an event. he has just released his brand new album 'the devil you know' and shared some of that album's content, as well as older songs the crowd all wanted to hear. can't fault the guy. he's pretty perfect. here's the problem. he hasn't played where i live in a very, very long time, at least not to my knowledge, in the time i have been aware of him and his music. i have such a strong love/hate relationship with LA. there is clearly an energy about the place that feels creative, fun, artistic, glitzy, trashy, plastic, boring - all coexisting with each other. depending on one's mood and emotional settings, the best of LA can shine and bring on the good times like no other city i know....or not....that's not the point here. in august the plimsouls are playing. in october roger waters is playing. in november the who are playing. there are others....the point is getting to and from, in and out of LA is an ordeal. it used to be exhausting. now it is almost unacceptable. there are a lot of thoughts that crop up while one is on the way to and from the city of angels. the first thought that cropped up for me, sitting in bumper to bumper world, was our continued refusal to accept that our main means of transporting ourselves -the car - is irrevocably damaging the planet. how are we going to heed the warnings and get on with better means of transportation. why do we ignore perfectly acceptable mass transit vehicles - wouldn't a train ride be fun?!? the second thought that materialized was the idea that we are all in these separate vehicles, determined to get where we are going and equally determined to ignore the indivduals in the cars surrounding us.

as we were driving home from the todd snider show - four of us carpooled up and back - there were a couple of girls - perhaps aged 12 to 14ish - in a car in front of us, waving to all the cars they were passing by. it was interesting to see how few people acknowledged them at all, much less waved back. we dEFinitely waved back. we even threw them our pez dipensers, fully loaded, and a candy necklace. we adopted their stance and started waving to other people in other cars as well. let me say, if the patrons in the other cars were not going to smile, wave and/or greet the little girls, they were rigid in their contempt and fearfully adamant about not waving at 4 adult women. it was all very disheartening....and by the fourth hour on the road, (in the dead of night it takes one and a half to two hours max to arrive at your destination), and still a very, very long way to go, i found myself forming the third thought which was the one about never coming to LA again. it wasn't worth it, even if it meant missing the plimsouls, roger waters and the who. i only wish the environmental problems out there on the highways or the pivotal real fear of relating to other humans could be as easily resolved.

the wreck of the arthur lee (1945-2006)

"By Forever Changes...I thought I was going to die at that particular time, so those were my last words."

Arthur Lee on the album released in 1967

"A human being is part of a whole, called by us the "Universe," a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings, as something separated from the rest--a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circles of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty."

sparked!

i have just returned from the apple store where i purchased a wireless mouse. my friend, stacie, accompanied me...she did not like the feel and/or design there at all...too 21st century....
i don't know why but it feels like the 21st century has kicked into warp speed over the last year, or maybe i am just noticing it more. there are the symptoms of a 'sci-fi' detachment that i have a difficult time accepting. i have a problem with most magazine covers these days. every cover graces a beautiful woman. but they all look like they have had botox! and, of course, most of them are under the age of thirty. i still can't wrap my head around HAVING to look younger, especially if one is under thirty! the cosmetic surgery industry baffles me. i won't have anyone cutting my face. my friend agrees. gives us the willies.
stacie says that by the time she hits her fifties, (quite a ways to go), people will either appreciate her as a great beauty or see her as some sort of freak. and she's probably right in either scenario.
i am reminded of some of my favourite movies that i have relished over time. only now these flashes of celluloid disturb me...they have come true. whether it is 'blade runner', 'brazil' or the plethora of fantastic rod serling 'twilight zones', each had hints, warning us what NOT to do. and it seems that, instead of heeding the warning(s), we have decided to make some of those sterile, yet subtle, aberrations our societal truths.
much is said about 'the power of suggestion' belief systems. well what are we suggesting globally? what are we wishing for? it would seem that a lot of disturbing images and sounds are being picked up under the radar - in our good old psyches. what are we sub-filtering? what are we retaining? what is just passing through? what are we wishing against?
it is very, very unnerving to watch the film, 'an inconvenient truth' and come out of the theatre into a sweltering heat wave with record breaking temperatures. my mind flashes on david bowie's dying planet in 'the man who fell to earth'. where and what are our purposeful directions? how relative are the changes that each of us make in a day? just the spark of an idea can go from one individual's brain to a rolled out carpet ride for someone else.
i type here and send my missive through the great cyberseance. HA! this is some ouija board!
who views? whose view...this magical means of communiqués gives me hope. if cold and dispassionate waves are being spread about like so many polluted air particles, so are the happy surprises i receive through my daily internet cruise. i relish the freedom one has online. i refuse to give up hope that humans wish to survive and evolve; it is inherent.
all i know is i have a hard time watching 'sci-fi' anymore. it seems just a little too real, and not in a positive way. i feel too uncomfortable in a space that feels too unearthly, like stacie, at the apple store.

nonessential irritations

have been meaning to post here since last september - it has become one of my nonessential irritations.
the problem is writing what i want to write. war, as a subject for music, is everywhere. i hear it everywhere. hell! it's even the subject of some of my own tunes! it confounds me! how do we humans get here again and again?

on the cyber seas

all these avenues on which to communicate give one hope that individuals can help fashion a better collective.
i hope to be posting some writing, some pictures and experiences that will bring people joy, provoke comments and invite sharing.
i have two artistic projects i am currently conjuring...heh heh...
one is a visual retrospective of a collective art installation that a group of 23 artists worked on two years ago in september. each artist was given a wall to paint in the upper flat - mine, rented - of a 1912 victorian house that was subsequently torn down. we wanted to give the old manor a lot of collaborative colour before her meeting with the demolition man. all the original art went down with it.

the retro show will consist of huge photograghs of the 23 pieces, as well as new art from the original artists who decide to participate. all suggested donations will go to those left homeless in new orleans. i'm shooting for an early november date. will keep you posted.

the second project is a musical piece and it is taking shape as i type.

to one and all out there, nice to meet you! layne
